Punggur Utara Irrigation System covers a command area of 31,500 ha, of which 17,500 ha have been developed. The assignment comprised the following activities:
- To upgrade and expand the Irrigation System;
- To strengthen O&M and agricultural extension;
- To strengthen the position of women in rural development;
- To enhance local capacity to plan and implement irrigation schemes taking into account the environmental issues and economic feasibility;
- To strengthen the economical position of the farmers.
Studies, design, preparation of contract documents and bid evaluation, cost estimation, contract specifications and drawings, tender documents, project planning, construction supervision and monitoring.
Civil works: reconstruction of the irrigation conveyance system, (main-, secondary- and tertiary- canals); enlargement and lining of the main canal (45.4 km) and rehabilitation of existing hydraulic structures to increase the discharge (from the present 26 to 65m3/s ); lining of 81.7 km secondary canals and the construction of the tertiary canal system.
On-farm development: review of water requirements; crop production and agricultural economics; land clearing, levelling, and advice on quaternary canal system and on-farm irrigation; to mitigate drainage problems. Participatory approach for improving irrigation practices and crop planning for higher benefits.
Institutional strengthening: Irrigation Operation and Maintenance (O&M); O&M manuals on irrigation management; project management; strengthening agricultural extension services; on-farm trials, training, transfer of technology. |
