Dry areas need to be irrigated, wet areas drained, high waters checked and the water table may not be too low. Water can be stored during wet periods in surface water reservoirs or subsurface for usage during dry periods, heavy rainfall can sometimes be stored temporarily in the ground before being drained off. Water management is one of Royal Haskoning’s core areas of expertise and is essential for the survival of people, animals and plants.

As well as its knowledge of the technology, Royal Haskoning knows about the institutional aspects of water management. Economists and management consultants work together with technicians to achieve institutional improvements. These are improvements to do with the organization of water boards, the organization of water users, improving the operations of (state-owned) water or sewage companies or privatizing them, or preparing large investment projects.
